Luciano Pavarotti, Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI (12 October 1935 – 6 September 2007) was an Italian operatic tenor, who also crossed over into popular music, eventually becoming one of the most commercially successful tenors of all time. He made numerous recordings of complete operas and individual arias, and established himself as one of the finest tenors of the 20th century.

He was! The world of music will never be the same without him.

I've never been to an opera, don't think I would like it, and don't know too many opera 'stars'. But everytime I heard Pavorotti sing, the sheer beauty of his voice, and the emotion he sang with, quite simply, brought tears to my eyes!

The same here! I can't imagine what it was like to hear him in person!

Luciano Parvarotti was an amazing talent who wow'd lots of people when he first broke out into the world spotlight. He was exceptional.

Ave Maria has been sung by lots of people - Andrea Boccelli, Celine Dione, Shubert, and many others throughout time - but oddly enough my favorite is Beyonce's Ave Maria. I like the urban spin on it. Honestly though, I'm not sure it's the same song because I once researched the words and there wasn't a word-for-word connection with the opera versions. There have been many translations of the original poem/prayer - Greek, German, Latin, Slavic Russian - that maybe it all gets lost in translation, so to speak. Not sure about that. I just know what I like. :-)

Ave Maria is just a title, there are countless different compositions that have that same title. What you need to look at is who composed it, then you can find the right lyrics.

I like Beyonce's version too, along with the others versions!

Yes, it's difficult to tell who actually wrote or composed the song first because it's considered a prayer and a poem as well. And as you wrote, there have been many translations.

according to wikipedia:

Here is an example of a text set by Josquin which begins with the first six words above, but continues with a poem in rhymed couplets:

Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Dominus tecum, Virgo serena.

Ae cuius conceptio,
solemni plena gaudio,
celestia, terrestria,
nova replet letitia.
Ave cuius nativitas,
nostra fuit solemnitas,
ut lucifer lux oriens
verum solem preveniens.
Ave pia humilitas,
sine viro fecunditas,
cuius annunciatio
nostra fuit salvatio.
Ave vera virginitas,
immaculata castitas,
cuius purificatio
nostra fuit purgatio.
Ave preclara omnibus
angelicis virtutibus,
cuius fuit assumptio
nostra glorificatio.

O Mater Dei, memento mei. Amen.

Thanks, Darrah. I recognize individual words, but can't quite put it all together into something understandable. M's comment above (5.1) helped give this a better perspective too.
