Badfinger was a rock band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s that became one of the earliest prototypes of the post-'60s power pop genre. The band was at times tagged as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationship with them and partly because of their similar sound. Badfinger had four consecutive worldwide hit songs in 1970-71, as well as recording the original version of "Without You," a frequently-covered song that became a Billboard #1 hit for Harry Nilsson and a #3 hit for Mariah Carey.

Founding member Pete Ham committed suicide on April 24, 1975, leaving a damning note about Stan Polley. The band folded following Ham's death, and various subsequent attempts to reform Badfinger floundered. Band member Tom Evans, who saw Pete Ham's body hanging, also died by suicide, on November 19, 1983. Evans never got over his friend's suicide, and has been quoted by many as saying in darker moments, "I wanna be where he is." The band's story was once described as "the classic rags-to-riches story with a tragic Shakespearean ending."

The song was written and sung by Pete Ham and produced by George Harrison, who plays some of the slide guitar parts of the song along with Ham. The record also features Leon Russellon piano. As the song was unfinished at the time Harrison left the Badfinger album to produce the Concert for Bangladesh, the final mix was done by Todd Rundgren, who took over Straight Up after Harrison's departure.

Released as a single in the U.S. in November 1971 (January 1972 elsewhere), it would become the group's highest charting single there, peaking at number four on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. It also reached the top ten on the UK Singles Chart. It remains the band's best-known song, most notably for the slide guitar solos. It went Gold in March 1972, becoming the band's first and only gold single. The single reached number ten on Billboard's Easy Listening survey.

Fame and fortune can be a double-edged sword. Very sad.

Love it.

Straight up is a great album and so is Head First.

Joe Jackson's tribute/rip off, "Breaking Us In To" makes me weep/smile as well.

Ps Todd is Godd.
