The Who are an English rock band formed in 1964 by Roger Daltrey (lead vocals, harmonica and guitar), Pete Townshend (guitar, keyboards and vocals), John Entwistle (bass guitar, brass and vocals) and Keith Moon (drums and percussion). They became known for energetic live performances which often included instrument destruction.[2][3] The Who have sold about 100 million records,[4] and have charted 27 top forty singles in the United Kingdom and United States, as well as 17 top ten albums, with 18 Gold, 12 Platinum and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the United States alone.[5] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Who

I hope y'all like this song. It's an awesome performance. Give me the names of a couple of more songs by them and I'll try to find videos to add underneath this one. I only have enough room to add two more though.

Update : cried (Al) chose these two great songs, Eminence Front and Behind Blue Eyes.

Feel free to leave the names of other The Who songs.

Pete Townshend wrote this song about a revolution. In the first verse, there is an uprising. In the middle, they overthrow those in power, but in the end, the new regime becomes just like the old one ("Meet the new boss, same as the old boss"). Townshend felt revolution was pointless because whoever takes over is destined to become corrupt. In Townshend: A Career Biography, Pete explained that the song was anti-establishment, but that "revolution is not going to change anything in the long run, and people are going to get hurt."

Ironic, considering that the ones that were going to change the world in the 60s are the ones we're bitching about being in power all these years later. Same as the old boss indeed.

Yeah, the pendulum swings back and forth.

As far as an awesome rock band though, you rarely hear their songs anymore. At least they rarely play them on the classic rock stations here or even on Sirius Satellite 70s that much. It seems like "classic rock" has turned into something from the 90s.

Yeah but poor Keith Moon...

Moon's penchant for the wild life was not only outwardly detrimental; it began to take a toll on his health while he was still in his twenties, as well as on his drumming and his reliability as a band member. On the 1973 Quadrophenia tour, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California, Moon took a large mixture of horse tranquillisers and brandy. He passed out during "Won't Get Fooled Again" and again in "Magic Bus". Townshend asked the audience, "Can anyone play the drums? – I mean somebody good". An audience member, Scot Halpin, filled in for the rest of the show. Townshend later said in an interview that Moon had consumed large tranquilliser pills, meant to be shot at animals, with the brandy.[28] During the band's recording sabbatical between 1975 and 1978, Moon put on a great deal of weight. Nonetheless, Entwistle maintained that Moon and The Who reached their prime live peak during 1975 and 1976. That tour earned them Rolling Stone's 'red suspenders' for best live rock band."

Moon's close friend Ringo Starr was seriously concerned about his lifestyle and told Moon that if he kept going the way he was he would eventually kill himself. Moon simply replied "Yeah, I know.

Or do you mean that Pete Townsend went to the dark side to write the song?

Here is an interview (editorial might be accurate) that might have some bearing on the comment. PT comes across as being more conservative and hawkish that one might generally assume he would be. I am not making a judgement one way or that other.

Thanks for the link DisplayName. Thought that's what Spooky was referring to.

I do like Pete even so.

OK, first of all, I didn't think about the politics of the song when I provided it. I picked that particular song and video because of the great performance. Nothing changes the fact that's it's still an amazing work of art (to most people.)

Second, the song was written in 1971 (?) What Pete felt then and now about politics is his business. If you want to look at him as some kind of "traitor" from the beginning or today, that's your business.

This is probably a poor example but I'll use it anyway. Cat Stevens created some beautiful music in the the 70s. Some think he still does. I don't really know but people have a right to decide what's good music and what's not. We have individual tastes. Many people want to judge Yusuf for his beliefs today. Did he say this, did it mean that? How does he feel about Islam? I don't care when I'm listening to his music and I don't have to be ashamed that I do like his music from the 70s even now.

With all due respect, this isn't going to turn into a political discussion even if thesong was written about politics, to a degree.

Thanks for the info.

I didn't intend to detract from the music; fopr my part I was trying to understand what a comment meant. I agree that you shouldn't have to consider the politics of the music, the time frame from when it was made. In general, I don't fault people for considering the background to lyrics. But specifically here, if that is not what kind of discussion that you want, I understand that.

Cat Stevens music is great.

You didn't, DisplayName. Nobody did in particular. I just wanted people to concentrate on the music, especially in the future. I can understand people wanting to know why the song was written. I just don't think it matters now as to Pete's political leanings.

Cool Darrah. My Wife is an overlooked song from The Who. I like it more than most of their more popular songs.

If that was your note beneath the video, Darrah...

Eminence Front is along the same lines though written much later, more like he's relating to your pick.

Behind Blue Eyes is quite angry (sort of an AYM thing) if that's what type you wanted to add.

Yes, that was my note. :-)

As you can see, I added those two great songs.

Thanks, Al!

Thank you, Darrah, and yes it was a wonderful performance in the song you chose (should have said that before). I felt well satisfied with it standing alone, but I had to suggest those two only because of the note! I'm glad it was yours, as I usually keep the original notes of those who posted the videos on youtube. :-)

Three videos seem to be the norm but I didn't know which other two to add. Since people have their favorites, I thought I'd just take the easy way out and let someone else choose. It worked. I'd completely forgotten about Eminence Front.

Both are great picks! The are a lot more too. lol

Lol yes! a new window, or is that innuendo I always get them confused, but I like that song.

This being your article and all, you could always add that one, maybe either replacing one or just adding it. Don't know what you're looking for as a go with theme here, but I am certain, with your taste in music, it could send whatever message you want to send.

Heh, I have a two song piece (W/Ingrid Michaelson and Bruno Mars) coming out for WW, and Kim that I feels embodies them well enough (one female piece and one male) scheduled for a V-day publication *if that feature works, first I've tried it.

My point being there's so much that can be said with music that sometimes cannot (at least for myself) be expressed any other way.

:-)

No, I'm just going for songs and videos from the you know who..The Who. lol

Sounds like we're on different wavelengths with this one. Just e-mail me.

This is one of those great songs that doesn't have a great live concert performance but this video was recorded in the studio.

Sorry there, I was punning, A new window sounds a lot like innuendo, which is what the song is (Squeeze Box)

Heh, another good song you picked almost suggested it myself but what I suggested was right after reading the other comments.

That live version of Eminence Front is better than the studio version.

And "Won't Get..." is one of the most exciting rock moments ever.
